Fixed in the U.S.A

Have you ever heard this term? Some of the factories in the city stay in business purely by fixing goods that come over from China jacked up. Some companies even cheat and have a button or a hem done here so they can put the desirable Made in the U.S.A label in. It becomes a factory speciality.

As I was riding the freight elevator down from one of my factories I spotted this scene. Tons and tons of little kid jeans being aired out by fans. The picture is kind of hazy, I actually made her back up the elevator so I could snap a better photo. That's when my factory owner started in about the fixed in the U.S.A score.

I found this to be pretty interesting. I for one love catching glimpses into other peoples factories, projects and even the headaches!

times they are a changin

Ten years ago our good friend Lee came over to our panhandle flat to teach us how to make a website. I believe we made him a steak dinner and paid him $150.00 to set up our site in Dreamweaver and to teach us how to use it. He stayed until the wee hours of the morning and Stacy took diligent notes. Stacy is mighty crafty with a design program and picked it right up. A few years later Lee was calling her to ask her a few questions about Dreamweaver. I am always so proud of how crafty Stacy is. She just figures shit out.

I can clearly remember receiving our first notification of payment email from our old website. Like our first wholesale order that came through the fax machine. We truly went bananas. Many outrageous dance moves were made that night and for lots of subsequent orders.

Well ten years later we are doing another set of electric dance moves. Our old website (as grateful as we are for it) needed a serious upgrade. The site has been transformed by the fantastic Kelly of Big Friend. She is a serious force of nature. Mission Accomplished

The sample sale on Saturday was amazing, I was glowing afterwards. I don't get to meet customers as often as Stacy does and it's an important act. The sun was shining and I installed square so my cc transactions were super easy (gone are the days of writing down cc's and billing addresses in our receipt books). One lady bribed her two kids to drive from Petaluma to dig the bins. Another told me she owned 8 classic dresses and they have changed her life. We hugged. I watched customers babies while they tried clothes. My friend Tracy drove by in her Fire Engine yelling my name! One faithful customer told me she almost dug the bins at our last sale on her wedding day. Instead one of her friends went and shopped for her quickly before the ceremony. This made my jaw drop. It made me really miss San Francisco of course but happy to be making clothes.

All against the backdrop of the Isso store! They have the best mix of vintage and original cut and sew. So much one of a kind goodness. Marie and Ivy the proprietresses have always been so kind to us over the years. They defy every kind of fashion stereotype there is. Back in 2005 during our first trade show in Vegas, they personally walked over all kinds of buyers to see our lines and helped us get our first sales. This is unheard of. They've been helping us ever since and I simply adore them.

An amazing day with the family. We ate a meal like civilized humans at a waterfront restaurant. The kids met new friends on the seashore and entertained themselves. Mike and I found a bodega and shared a beer with our pants rolled up and feet in the water. We had no towels and were not prepared for the sand and the sea. Sometimes that's just the best way, too much preparation kills the beautiful thing.

The amazing and talented Lauren Wolf just opened up her very own shop called Esqueleto in Oakland. Stop by and meet the woman behind the sting rays, fangs, agates and anvils. Wolf stocks several other jewelry designers in addition to her namesake line. The storefront will wow you, it's a stunning mix of industrial meets her signature death valley aesthetic. I'd say it's the perfect platform to showcase her raw, nature inspired pieces.

Lauren has a special place in my heart. I have been collecting her pieces over the last 8 years. Most importantly she designed my wedding ring in collaboration with my husband. I was also treated to earrings and a stingray cuff after the birth of my children. A seriously rad push present.

Time has been moving super fast. Weddings, fall shipments, many restless nights. A couple of decisions have been made. I need a bigger workspace, I can't make our 400 sq foot warehouse space work anymore. Especially not with the bulk that comes with fall merchandise. 200 long sweatshirts are like 10 men standing in my way. I probably don't need to say it, but I don't like men standing in my way. I like when I make a definite irreversible decision like this, because I have no choice but to make it work.

We've been having some fun around here to. An awesome discovery was recently made while getting ready for my sister's wedding. Julian adores being in a tux! It really could have gone either way. Is this the parallel universe of tutus? I have to say he looks quite dapper in them as well. He was so damn charming in this thing. Oy vey.

We sometimes joke we should have called our company ASAP. I actually think the name is not half bad. Don't steal it from me! We write that on every single thing we are working on. It's always the truth too! I can just see our vendors rolling their eyes when we proclaim this, as if it's the first time we've ever called in the favor. Truth is we need everything yesterday in this business and I don't see that changing. (It's really a sobering thought.) Good thing I'm drinking wine through this blog posting.

In the summer months we are mainly just driving from factory to sample sewer, to trim house, back to the factory, waiting for the dye house to drop off something crucial that completes the puzzle. A shrink test, a sample, a new color we are developing, a button, marker, a flipping zipper. Why are the zippers always late? There is so much you are controlling, and yet so much that is dependent on the word and competence of others. Don't forget sheer luck and attention to detail. And fusible. I weigh them all in equally. I could easily just keep my head down all of July and August and plow through what I need to do.

But then who would read Sendak to these two rascals? I love them from every corner of my heart, and they remind me of the true meaning of ASAP. There is no waiting on a diaper that needs to be changed, or a hungry melting down 3 year old. The samples they will get done, they must. The shipments they will surely go out. The kids they will go to bed and mom can always hippity hop back on the computer to make all that magic happen.

July Madness

July and August are busy times over here at Curator. I'm taking in a lot of sights and sounds on my work days. Here are some pics I snapped along my travels this week.

The Ikea bag i'm schlepping everywhere was way too happy to ignore. I just snagged a Goodbyn Lunchbox for my son & a Bandit Bla Bla. Both of these goodies are now carried in store, such radical gifts for kids. The lunchbox comes with stickers you can decorate, and even has a sticker that say's "I'm allergic to ___". This sticker has a special place in my heart.

Next up the factory floor. One of the sewing ladies had the cutest apron on. I loved her style. She used to sew a lot in Hong Kong and this was one of her designs. Later I could see she was giving me the don't steal this idea eye. A pretty smart lady. ;-).

Next up T-shirts!

Here's a sneak peak of a Dolly Parton Tshirt we have in production. We were not joking about the 9 to 5 inspiration. Printed by the prolific folks over at Ape Do Good and designed by the one and only Adele Mildred. Lonnie and Burt will be keeping her company.

I can still feel the mania to press record when a JAM came on KMEL that I did not have recorded! It's on my daybed while I try to lay down, do my algebra homework and dream about dorky boys. I'm very certain more than one person was punched over it. The volume so easily rolled down to tell secrets.

Here are a few images I snapped over the last week. School is out for a couple of weeks, so my three old Julian is ruling the roost! I'm beginning to understand my mother's face when we skipped home on the last day of school. Three very long months. Oy vey.

One day: Julian figures out how to scale island to access the food cabinet. He finds the gummy bears (vitamins, how can this be?) and chocolate bear kid laxatives. :-/. Proves to be an interesting day. Did I mention it was raining and I had a 9 month old in hand?

Meet Your Maker

Don't you ever just wish you could make shoes? I most certainly do. A good pair of shoes can really change things up. See these shoes for instance, these shoes are inspiring me to wear calf length black skirts! I had no idea how deliciously comfortable this state of being is. Leggings as pants with oversized asymmetrical t-shirts is my everyday kid uniform.

I do have a shoe inspiration thing. So recently when our model Rachel came in wearing these beauties, I swooned and wanted more details. Turns out she makes these bad rides. It's not every day you meet a shoemaker. Her version of the sandal below has "mohawks" (the leather jutts out ever so sweetly in back.) Really cutely punk.

Then she tells me that she's hosting a workshop at Gravel and Gold on the 26th to teach other potential shoebies how to make their own sandals. How generous of her! I hear there are only a couple spots left.

Lastly I really want these funnel neck boots. They are taunting me on etsy in size 6. I can only dream of what kind of awesome elfin outfits they would spawn.

Alrighty I believe that's enough nonsense for one day? Happy Friday.

Followed up by a note explaining she just had to have this! Just one of ten million reasons I love her.

landscraping!

After living in our house in Palo Alto for almost three years, we finally dug up the nasty asphalt driveway and the weed ridden front lawn. There was just no way around it. I am just now understanding that this overgrowth has been embarrassing. My defense? I hail from San Francisco where front lawns are made of cement. It's no wonder I keep trying to incorporate the substance into our new design. There will be vegetables too I promise.

Check out some of the demo and I'll be sure to post pics when the business is done. Below is the view from my kitchen window and our new walkway. I had many frantic sessions outside with a tape measure to make sure it was correct. When the contractor heard I was a designer he let out a little moan.

Went to the Warfield Thursday night to see the one and only PJ Harvey. To say the least, she was unbelievable. The show was sold out and pretty packed, but my man and I found a comfy spot to stand fairly close to the stage. She wore a long white vintage dress and an insane two-winged black feathered headdress. She played all of her new album 'Let England Shake' with older songs between.

A song from her new album. So good.

Small Town

Recently we visited Felton, California in the Santa Cruz mountains to take in some sun, fun and family. While going to cross the world's largest covered bridge, we stumbled upon a dance troup being led by a fiddle player. No joke. The dancers all had these shell covered pads on their knees and sticks to do their synchronized dancing. Whenever I see something unexpected like that, I take it as life's reminder to always take the opportunity to go to see new places. "My favorite thing is to go where I've never been." I have this Diana Arbus quote hanging by my bed, although I'm not sure she's the only person to have said this. Sounds like something my son would say.

After our picnic by the bridge we journeyed up to Loch Lomond Lake. There were paddle and motor boats for rent and a little island you can boat out to with bbq pitts! It was like a secret hidden mini Lake Tahoe nestled up in the mountains. It makes me supremely happy to know this is just one hour away from my house. We were a little late to get a boat, so instead we took a walk around the resorvoir. Tall trees just quiet my head.

On a roll, we headed to downtown Felton to eat at Redwood Pizzeria. We must have looked like we really needed beers because the waitress kept suggesting them. My husband of course was on board with her noise. The trees were my beers. As we headed our troops out of the pizza parlor, I noticed this Doctor sign. I got a complete kick out of it, how many worlds away is this from going to a Kaiser appointment?

Down the road I saw a thrift store called "The Abbot" that looked like it had a grim reaper as it's logo! My interest was certainly peaked, but the kids were screaming and it was Sunday. I must return to visit this shop. Turns out an Abbot is a kind of priest and he is known to walk about in the town in his garb. This place is starting to feel a bit like magic to me, you?

Goodbye Miss Violet Eyes

Just a few weeks ago I stayed up late and watched Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Mesmerized by how beautiful Elizabeth Taylor looked in the film, I caught myself not looking at anyone else except her, what she was wearing and how she would pose that insane figure of hers. Even Paul Newman, with his exceptional good looks, didn't stand a chance next to her. My favorite film of hers is probably Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, as she is outstanding and I get so uncomfortable when watching it.

The lady leaves a legacy that not only involves film, beauty, diamond bling and perfumes - but also an enormous heart. She was an AIDS/HIV activist like no other.

Lingo

Since my husband and I often work at home together, there is lots of overhearing. He's particularly taken with my lingo, always joking how are those enzymes doing? We sometimes paddle wash our t-shirts in them for extra softness. Babe are those lab dips ready? When we are approving our custom colors, we try to match the original pantone swatch (or inspiration) to the actual color on a garment. Different fabrics take on color in different ways and we have to decide (in very good light) if we still like them or not.

So tonight Mike looks over and asks me so how are those markers laying out? When we have a new item we are putting into production, we send out the pattern to our digitizer to lay out in a marker. She takes our 4 sizes and places them in an arrangement on a very long piece of paper, so we get the best results when we cut. Mixing sizes saves a lot of fabric! We are charged with checking it before it goes to print to make sure everything is there. Stacy just noticed there was a medium collar piece missing (nice catch!). Once the marker is correct and complete it's taken to our cutter and he lays it out and fires up his electric cutter. There is certainly no turning back then!

Lovies

Over the past month, we've been working day and night getting our Spring line out the door and Fall 2011 developed. Expect some site updates early in March and some sneak previews of Fall. No matter how early we start developing, there is always a mad dash to the finish and some unexpected curve ball. One tiny example, our sample sewer who never leaves the house, decides not to pick up her phone on the day we need to retrieve the samples!

During one of our crazy work sessions, my husband sensed my high stress levels. He texted me this photo of my son Julian and his friend Paisley. There is nothing like a little pair of pony tails to remind you nothing is that big of a deal. Minutes later we were on our way to get those samples!!

Mochi Time!

Over the past couple of years our family has resurrected the old tradition of making mochi for the New Year. It's one of my favorite parts of the holiday season, it honestly takes the cake on Christmas for me. No major expectations, no frenzy of wrapping paper and no major freeways. Just some good old eats and chats.

We spend about half a day, hanging out rolling mochi. Much of it to be bagged up and given to others. Some mochi are filled with sweet beans and others stay plain and get fried up for late night snacks. The mood is light and there is always some fish soup cooking on the stove.

Back in the day processing the rice for mochi was very labor intensive, they used crazy pallet tools to pound the rice. By all accounts it was a lot of work. I wish we could find this very cool photo of the my father in law wielding the pallet, while another spins the rice beneath him. You get the immediate sense that the two mochi participants better be in super synch. If not someone was going to get knocked unconscious.

Of course now we have three super cute mochi machines that take the danger element out of the event. So everyone can sip sake, beer and chat. Once the buzzer hits we all take our positions!

This year I'll admit I was lazy holding the baby and didn't roll much mochi, but next year I vow to be out there. Sipping sake with the best of them!

At the end of it all, we make this mochi offering with a tangerine on top for good luck. We forgot ours and I think that's why the year started off so rocky for us! (major stomach flu, followed by major dental work!) Yikes.

I am a book lover and giver. If I read a good novel it will not stay on my shelf for very long until I hand it off to someone worthy. Then I will demand we talk about it. When I get less busy (ever?) I would very much like to start a book club. With all this internet, I sure do miss talking about books.

I'm pretty discriminate with my children's books. I've discovered there are some real duds out there. When You Were Small is my favorite of late, it has just the right amount of whimsy paired with show-stopping illustrations. I finally got my son to love it and I take it as a personal victory. It's way beyond rad.

In another life I worked at a tiny independent book store in San Diego and amassed some of my favorite art books. I spent the better part of my wages on these titles. Of course I've learned a good book can be found most anywhere. I especially love these Family Of Woman, Family Of Man photography books from the seventies, they contain some heart stopping images. Keep your eye out for them at thrift stores and estate sales for pennies on the dollar.

Check out these cheesy titles I stumbled across at the Savers in Redwood City (which is so massive, it takes up a whole city block). Looking (and not buying them) just made me happy.

Lastly I've been doing some crazy organizing and purging. I recently came across a knitting book my late grandma gave me, seeing her handwriting sent me quickly into tears. I don't have any plans to learn how to knit (I'm hopeless), but this one is definitely in my keep forever pile.

My mother in law organized a family trip to Pajaro Dunes a few weeks ago. It was a blistery rainy weekend, that would have bummed many people out, but I couldn't have been happier to be sealed up in condo called Shorebirds with my loved ones. We were even able to steal a few moments between storms, to go outside to feed the ducks and make some sand castles.

Due to the extra hands on deck, I got to sneak out to the Goodwill and found this amazing sunburst dish set. This is my zen. I paid $26 bucks for a 6 person dinner set, coffee cups, sugar container, salad dishes. I doubt I would ever forget the trip, but since I have baby brain these days this dish set guarantees I won't.

The fact that it's orange makes it all the more sweet. We've all been engulfed in Giant's fever!! They won the pennant on our stay and some major man-tears were shed.

Little Sloan Catherine arrived on September 26, 2010! We are majorly back to basics around here, tiny burps take on major significance, the middle of the night ceases to be just that. All that newborn jazz. We are adjusting, the second go round you have so much more strength and humor. And the light at the end of the tunnel. That and this little blondie pictured below isn't going to let anyone go ahead and start sleeping on the job.

It's been a crazy hot dog summer. Stacy and I have been working our tushies off (she literally has at boot camp but that's another story) and we need some help moving this big bad machine along. Especially rolling into the holiday season. Historically it's been hard for this army of two to relinquish control, but we've finally reached our breaking point. We are looking for a Jack/Jane of all trades intern who can join our small apparel company. There are many opportunities to learn from our wholesale, retail, and online business. Basic photoshop and Illustrator skills are a must. Web and photo skills are a major plus. Fashion experience would be preferable. We can offer school credit and great references. Must be able to work independently offsite, and check in and deliver projects equipped with good grammar, spelling and attention to detail. We highly value a sense of humor and the ability to take a project to completion. Some duties to include sizing and correcting photos, steaming clothes for photo shoots, gathering info and photos for blog entries, trend research, inventory, merchandising, retail, sourcing etc. This is an unpaid internship, but if the fit is right, we would consider turning this into a part time paying job.

Half Birthday!

Julian is officially 2.5 years old! New milestones include telling me when to put my hair up and down, rolling his eyes on cue, and asking me constantly for money. This picture pretty much sums up the sass I'm dealing with.

For Julian's real proper birthday we hired a caricature artist to draw up our guests. A true indulgence! I recently had the picture framed and it continues to make me happy!

Ever stumble upon a picture that just completely sums up your youth?Our dear friend Erik unearthed this photo of Stacy and I recently. It's not the clearest picture by any means, but somehow that makes it even sweeter to me. I'm guessing we were probably 8 years deep into our friendship here. I can't remember what exact trouble we were headed for in this photo but I'm certain we found some. I can clearly remember how happy that $0.25 cent necklace made me, and the power of the ice cold Budweiser.

We've been busy shipping our little hearts out this week. I am one with my packing tape, uline boxes, industrial scale and of course my trusty fedex man. I wish he came a little later as I always end up having to schlep some to the station myself.

Fall is our absolute favorite season, it's how we got started in this crazy business. Our love of layering in San Francisco weather, and of course the pursuit of the coziest sweatshirt. Today we were both swooning as we packed up the pieces to set them off for their new homes. It makes all the hustle of the last few months worth it.

It's been a crazy-train few weeks for us, please do not take our silence to mean we are not working. It's quite the contrary, we just shipped out our first fall delivery and we are in the throes of developing Spring 2011. Below are some fabric pieces that were on their way to becoming classic dresses. I'm so delighted with the fall 2010 colors, a beautiful lake, vampire red and a chocolate brown. The photo is a bit bleached out, but somehow captures that factory floor feeling.

Stay tuned for more blog posts. Stacy spent some quality time with an inventor in Southern California and made some rad jewelry. Now that we have this inventor within arms reach, we can't remember any of the fabulous inventions we used to daydream about. Hopefully when production passes we can start thinking big again.

Oh Summer is here and my big 2010 exercise plans seemed to have evaporated like the ice in my freezer when it's not used. I have gotten on the fitness train for a few days at a time only to fall off for weeks, making those far and few days of heavy sweating pretty pointless. Soooo, I am here to announce that starting July 12th, I am going to do a bootcamp to kick my hiney into some sort of shape. Now that I have blogged it, I have to do it, right?

The Weekend

The heat turned up this weekend and we spent most of our waking hours outside. Below is my son Julian doing his best to keep cool in our backyard.

On Sunday we decided last minute to go to the Sunset Magazine festival in Menlo Park. My former self used to avoid the magazine in waiting rooms, thinking it was for old people. Now that I've come to terms with my oldness, I'm totally down with this magazine! The festival did not disappoint. There was lots of high end patio furniture to swoon over and vertical succulents to adore. Don't forget the simple joys of red and white!

I wish i could go on a real nature walk today but for now these photos of Point Lobos are going to have to tie me over. My husband and I were celebrating our 5th anniversary on this walk below.

I try to push work out of my mind on weekends but alas inspiration is everywhere. I was digging the rocks and drift wood. Michael reminded me it wasn't cool to take driftwood for house ware projects. Oh yes that's right.

This perfect day ended when the wind kicked up and we both turned to each other and said "Ice cream". Yes indeed it was time.

Lady Trip

For my birthday I took off to Santa Monica/Venice to visit my dear friend Sarita. She has made quite a lovely life for herself there. Upon arrival I was greeted by one of her amazing friends, Saetha who made me this fantastic pie, accompanied by the real deal whip cream. This girl dove straight into my heart. After all we'd never met!

There were lots of long walks on the beach, spontaneous naps and coffee trips to Intelligentsia on Abbot Kinney. Sarita mandated a trip to the Venice Canals at dusk, and I always trust this lady. Imagine most houses on the canals with their deck doors open, and the white wine aflowing. I longed to live there, or at the very least wedge my pregnant belly through those enchanting deck doors to get a closer look.

You can't see the just married sign here, but these two were quite a vision. We found out later they had been married twelve years and were just taking the newlyweds canoe for a test ride.

There was lots of eclectic charm on the canals, signs like "hippies use side door"and inspiring beachy gardens. This house pretty much sums it up though. Part of my heart was eating up these scenes, and the other slice was ready for another piece of that darn pie.

Dear Readers,

I still have high aspirations for this blog, and yet I am not even close to delivering. First step towards my potential awesomeness, I cannot and will not leave my blog posts to be conducted in the evening. I'm just too busy racing around after this little tiger.

This weekend I do vow to take in some new sights to deliver to you. Business and pleasure. I'm going to LA solo to conduct some fabric business (crack some heads) and visit one of my loveliest and dearest friends. She always finds the best abodes and I'm told her new spot will not disappoint. Just a few blocks from the beach, I've been promised a beach cruiser, live bluegrass and a projection screen! This tiger tamer could not be happier about all that. Let's hope I pause to take pictures.

I for one love sleepovers. We packed ourselves up to Elk Grove this weekend to lounge around with some of our favorite people. All of a sudden, I was given the very spontaneous offer to ride in a tiny two seater plane.

As you can see below, I played it cool and didn't get too excited.

Here I am with the birthday boy pilot Isaac. He was a fantastic guide, pointing out a burned out mill and an elaborate looking prison I might have missed. My seacliff jacket acted as my perfect companion too, the plane had no door so I nestled my hands up under the collar and smiled wide from ear to ear.

Here are a few glimpses into the last week.

I'm back into thrift store shopping but with a more discerning eye. I responsibly passed on this horse head candy jar but it did make quite an impression.

Stacy and my husband have been telling me forever that I need new shoes. I certainly do but I always seem to pick the most expensive, unattainable pair and I don't want to settle for anything less. I have problems. Yet these little numbers were the right price and shade. Purchased right in time for the rain storm.

Last but certainly not least here is my oldest nephew Kevin. He had just scored 26 points in his basketball game and was not ready to take the headband off. I can't really blame him as he sure does look like he means business. Being an Auntie definitely rules.

It's one of my resolutions to start posting more blogs to make this section of the site snazzier and more informative about what we do. To record more of my life. Some weeks we are at our factories nearly every day developing our lines with nary a photograph snapped.

Pictured below are two ladies who oversee the making of many of our garments. They own the factory and are much like us. Great friends who get to spend their days working, laughing (and the ultimate friendship tester) problem solving together.

They were shy about getting picture taken (sounds familiar) and approved this one.

Other resolutions were to begin "jogging". When you design clothing you become more and more aware of when you start jumping sizes. I started before the New Year so I could be more in routine when 2010 hit. Somehow this winter break seemed incredibly long and busy, with more bites of cake and games of Wii than I ever thought possible.

So I raise my fist (not glass - no alcohol either)to a beautiful 2010 and embarking on new things. I leave you with my son Julian, pictured here trying Dance Dance Revolution for the very first time.

Like Randy Newman once said, "We love LA"! It may have taken us a while to arrive at this conclusion, but after many fact finding missions and glorious thrift store scores we've decided that the city has been kind to us. Even the long drive gives us an opportunity to chat and tell each other stories we've never heard. After you've been hanging for 17+ years (living together for much of that and owning a business together) it is a pretty amazing thing to hear new tales to add to each others character profiles. That and Stacy has the best stories!

On this particular trip we were scheduled up to the nines. One of our missions was to crack a few heads in the garment district, sometimes you just have to meet face to face with people to make them listen and do favors for you.

Next up we recently tried to figure out the animal that is all over printing. We took at tour of this facility and were pretty stoked on our findings. It remains to be seen whether we will take the plunge into printing but i thought folks might want to see some photos from the "inside". I personally was loving the 6 foot tall screens.

Keeping up a blog is no easy feat for me. I keep spacing on the password to blogger, losing my camera cord (still can't find it and have so many amazing blog posts tied up in there), throw in a lost key here or pair of baby tennis shoes and mama's blogging time has more than expired. I'm thankful though that some things are still easy to find.

First up we've been very busy. Between creating Spring 2010 (we have to do this 6 months in advance), producing and shipping Fall/Winter 2009, we've also opened a tiny shop. People (mostly seniors) ask me why on earth would we do this in this point and time? I answer it's actually a product of the times. We were renting space for just a few hundred dollars a month less in rusty, dusty cold factories and we were unable to meet our customers first hand. Not able to make awesome parties or have proper dressing rooms. 1767 Church Street which will act as our design office, retail shop and party place. We are still hammering out all the details but we would love for you to come by and visit. We are closed monday open 12-8 Tuesday through Saturday. Open on sunday until at least 5pm. We will post store hours on the site soon...

I don't have proper pics of the shop 'Curator" but will be posting them real soon. For now you can read about the shop here on the 7X7 blog.

Above is a glimpse of our spring 2010 line that almost swallowed us whole for the 3 long months of summer. Good thing it was completely worth it!

Oh my Minnesota!

I've just returned from a 5 day jaunt to Hastings, Minnesota! It was high-time to introduce my son Julian to his Great Grandma, Uncles, Aunts and Cousins. Julian was awesome, he fell asleep right before take off, truly taking after his mama.

There were long dinners, drives, unexpected meetings with old friends, baffling road construction and lots of Wii games. The major heartbreak is our overly friendly child lept into all of their arms except his Great Grandma Dorothy (88 years young). We will return soon for another visit just to remedy this! I can't wait until I can demand compliance....

Day three we checked out Edina - a cute little suburb of Minneapolis. Linda, our host fixed us the most delightful sandwiches with her homemade pickles. We took a walk around her cute neighborhood, and I dipped in for a quick drink here with the Nagayama brothers. Always a good time with these two, for certain there will be some sports and bathroom talk. Well and the best laugh this side of the Mississippi.

I have to say that this trip once again reaffirmed that people in the Midwest are beyond nice. I know i'm generalizing here but after growing up in a big city the difference is palpable. We had nothing but love and sweet interactions with all those we encountered.

It's back to the grind for me (I should be asleep!) so I will leave you with Grandma's Dorothy's needlepoint which pretty much sums up my current condition.

There are some exciting things brewing at She-bible headquarters that we are not able to talk about just yet. So i'm attaching some photos of some of the hardest worker bees I know. The She-bible crew - Stacy, Sofie and Max. They are pretty much the coolest chicks ever and so much fun to eat lunch with it and yelp out opinions to.

Above is my newest form of surburban therapy. We joined a pool and at the days end we can walk a few blocks to take a dip and frolick as a family. I was being a penny pincher and almost passed up the opportunity a few months back. One major heat wave had me digging in our recycling to fish out the paperwork. It's so something out of Little Children and has been very worth it. Eavesdropping on families and seeing my little pisces baby so happy splashing around in the water has been outrageously entertaining. Summer hasn't even really begun yet!!

We try to recycle however we can. We ship a lot of boxes around the country (and the world for that matter) and we like to reuse whenever possible. Enter a big skyscraper called the SOMA grand going up up up in San Francisco. Think about how much cardboard consumption goes into one of those huge apartment buildings? How many ceiling fans, kitchen fixtures, lights are individually wrapped in cardboard and unpacked and then immediately dumped into landfills? Now picture an awesome electrician named Luz Maria who visited our warehouse and noticed how similiar in size these boxes were to our exact needs. Soon enough she collected (so very neatly and OCD like) these clean perfect boxes for us to ship out our materials in. Thanks Luz Maria!!

The February Blur

After what seemed to be never ending running around to finish our Fall '09 samples, I was finally off to Project in Las Vegas (2/16 - 2/19)

While staying at the luxurious Luxor, we were inundated with this poster of Criss Angel. Not only was it all over the entrance of the hotel and every elevator, but when we'd get back to our room every night the message light on our phone was blinking. Yep, a Criss Angel recording awaited us. Just in case we didn't get the memo he had a show there.
Of course, the fever hit me and I became obsessed with him and his hardcore pose.
Must win car. Must see show. With my non-stop preaching of the Criss Angel gospel, Amedee soon followed suit.
While at the tradehows, I don't leave the booth much. I left for 5 minutes to get one of the free manicures down the aisle and was immediately called back to the booth for assistance. No mani and no one at the booth by the time I got back. Figures.

With 6 hours to kill until my flight to NY, I was not only lucky enough to catch the most rockin' rock band, Aquarius, play at a lounge in Mandalay Bay, but I also got to watch this couple grope and make-out to every song played by the rockin' cover band. I never knew AC/DC & Def Leppard could be so romantic.

Goodbye Vegas.

Hello New York.

I was here to do the Coterie show. I took a red-eye landing myself in the big apple at 8am. I headed directly to the East Village to pick-up my NY wifey, who had hangers and our She-bible sign, and then go right to Pier 90 to set up the booth.

Unlike Project in Vegas where we show as a sh0wroom, at Coterie we have our own little 10' x 8' booth.
After a long and semi-stressful morning (our mannequin didn't show up and tensions were running high), it was time for a nap and then dinner at Mamas! Fried Chicken over mac n' cheese - YES PLEASE!

Nerds.

I passed through Grand Central for the first time. It was beautiful.
We had a glass of wine at a bar inside called Oyster. I fell in love with the logo.

NY was full of fun. Dinners and friends and relaxed good times, but it was back to SF to catch up on life.
And what good timing. It dumped a foot of snow in a blizzard 2 days after I left. I guess NY was bummed to see me leave.

On another note, our Spring is trickling in. Items will be for sale on the site soon so stayed tuned.

Friday At Long Last

Blogging sure ain't easy. We know folks who can blog and hang out at the same time. Their also twittering up a storm while they make soup from scratch. We are not yet of this ilk. This post is a reminder to myself that I don't have to write a short story to get one or two thoughts out there.

First and foremost my son Julian is turning one. This is so bittersweet. While I can't wait to have conversations with him (and reason with him) I also can't believe he isn't asleep on my chest anymore. The baby zone zipped by so fast. Here are two picks - one from his first days of life (swaddled to perfection by his pops)

Then a picture of him successfully breaking into our friends entertainment center in his adidas suit. Safety latch and all.

Also these impossibly cute doggies are here to say hello. They were knitted by my husband's super creative Aunt Joycey. I absolutely adore them. Especially the removable scarves! I keep telling her to start an etsy shop with them but she just giggles. They are technically for my son but I have them out of reach until he can appreciate them. I've got them displayed in a super cute nook in our house and they bring with them lots of sunshine and love!

Crunch Time

After our vow to do more blog posts we've been blitzkrieged by the craziest crunch time of our business. We know it's coming and still it seems impossible to prepare for the full scope of what we have to accomplish. Twice a year we go to Project in Las Vegas where we show our current line (spring and summer 09) and concept and create our next season Fall 2009. With over 30 new fall designs in the hopper this is a delicious and harrowing experience. At the same time we are managing spring production, summer orders and shipping out our store orders. She-bible has also started doing Coterie in New York which starts the day after Las Vegas wraps. That means Stacy will be reporting from both shows and also gone for over 8 days in the eye of the storm. Updates will follow but for now I leave you with some surburban preschool images. My little one has started going to school once a week.

Black Cloud Week

To say I've had a lot of jalopies in my time is a grand understatement. I come from a family who offers to buy any used car mentioned in casual conversation. A few years ago I broke the mold (sick of receiving notices from AAA that I had exceeded my tows for the year) and bought a safe and practical used Volkswagon Passat Wagon. It has been the ultimate perfect thing to schlepp rolls of fabric around in and to load up for our grueling sample sales. It's the ultimate small business car, not to mention family road trip ride.

Over the last few years the car has been more than trusty. My confidence surged. I canceled my AAA membership. It's the sort of car I felt like I could load up and drive off into an Armageddon in. We'd be okay if we could just siphon the gas. Well I'm sure you can see where this is going..

One breakdown and I might not let it get in the cracks but I got stranded two days in a row. Burning rubber, malfunction blinking lights, flares and taking up residence on the side of the road. Of course there were some highlights, one fast talking, menthol smoking tow truck driver who got me to crack a couple smiles. Nothing can turn my mood quicker though than seeing a certain long bed toyota truck putting to my rescue. The better half (and ride) of She-bible.

Magical Mystery Tour

So I made my way across the Bay to do some research for our Fall 2009 line. Our good friend, Busy Liz Baca, is a hunter of the vintage treasure. She has made a most amazing business of selling her good finds to some of the best vintage stores in NYC, LA, and here in SF. I got the privilege of doing some digging of my own in her warehouse of wonders.

Vintage Silver Leather Contempo Crop Jacket....YES PLEASE!

Deirdre and I started a wooden hanger project years ago. They were based on girl hangers I had as a child and the ponytail on top of their head was the hanger. Anyway, the hanger above made me die. It's amazing and re-enforces the idea that we should get to makin' some of those hangers. Could you imagine your closet full of foxy ladies wearing your clothes!?!

I've had a stack of artwork staring at me for a good long while. We moved way to much in the last 3 years that I never got around to getting out the nails. Now that were all settled...framing and placing has finally occurred. Our last home definitely was missing all this!

We always vow to do something major in the new year. Jam ourselves back into those size 27's, hit the yoga mat(then punch it, then kick it), read more books and be better with money. The standard stuff.

So I got a bonus magazine titled FASHION ROCKS with my issue of Teen Vogue this month. Yes, I get Teen Vogue. Anyway, the magazine was pretty corny with fashion being shown off by Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Mariah Carey, and even Keith Urban (Nicole Kidmans Country Crooning Alcoholic hubby) but with all this shite came one photoshoot that couldn't have made me happier. Titled 'Here Comes The Sun', Dhani Harrison, son of George, was featured in an 8 page fashion spread full of natural hippy delight.
